The second floor, or mezzanine, was referred to as the “banking floor.” Intended to be impressive, the offices of N.W. Harris & Co., Banker’s were no exception.

At that time, the uppermost floors commanded lower prices. They often housed bathrooms and necessary facilities, as was the case of the Marquette Building. The 16th floor housed toilets and a barbershop. The 17th (the attic) held janitor’s quarters, storage, and artists’ studios. Office floors were not laid out until a rental was secured to allow flexibility with tenants. Each floor had washbasins, a telephone, and coat closets.
