Aldis had the building piped for both electricity and gas. Electricity was the more expensive of the two, but it was cost effective to lay lines during construction. Grumbling over this “luxury,” Peter Brooks had once complained that by providing Edison incandescent electric lights, “the landlord of the near future may expect to furnish food, drink, and raiment to his tenants as well as other comforts.”
